Language Programmes in France
Programme Concept :
The student lives with a French family as a family member, while attending organised classes and/or activities for the duration of the programme.
Programme purpose:
To help students improve their oral & written knowledge of the French language. To learn about
French culture by actively participating in family, school & community life. This in turn will enhance self confidence and benefit inters personal relationships and this results in better understanding and tolerance among people throughout the world.
Expectations :
Adapting to a new family, school friends, language and culture is very challenging and often difficult, but always rewarding with benefits for the students lifetime.
Courses :
Classes are given by native F.L.E. Qualified Teachers. Classes consist of role play, project work, aural & oral exercises etc. Teaching French as a Foreign Language is not based on the Irish Intermediate or Leaving Cert Programmes.
Important aspects of life and culture :
The socio economic standing of families varies greatly, and may be very different from that of the student. Most host families supervise the activities of their children, some quite firmly. Teenagers go only where they have been permitted to go and must return by the agreed hour, or phone if they will be late because of emergency.
Our Families come from all walks of life. They may live in cities, towns, villages or isolated rural districts. They may have children of all ages or none at all. They may be a working couple, or retired, a single parent family or extended family, but they are all known to our local French Organisers and all will welcome you into their homes to share the everyday life of their family.
Although Host Families are not expected to organise any excursions, they may well take you out and about to local places of interest etc. You should realise that French customs and family life vary from our Irish way and you should be prepared to adapt to these differences.
Parents are advised to give their daughters/sons time to settle in and not to be ringing them every day, as this constant contact with home distracts the Irish student from their Immersion with their French Family. Friends participating on our Transition year Prog. in the same area will not be allowed to meet each other on a regular basis
Grievance Procedure:
While it is our stated aim to facilitate students and their parents in every way possible it is our experience that from time to time difficulties may arise. In that event immediately contact the Local French Organiser or Leader in the area who will deal with the matter. Complaints after the student’s departure will not be considered.
